Get Smart Interview with Producer Leonard Stern

In this edition of TV Time Machine, we are proud to interview Leonard Stern-writer, director and executive producer of the classic TV spy spoof Get Smart. Over the course of his remarkable career, Mr. Stern has written for such classic series as The Honeymooners, Sergeant Bilko, and The Steve Allen Show.

At the height of the 1960's spy craze, Get Smart made its debut and ultimately stumbled its way into classic television history. For five seasons on NBC and CBS, Agents 86 and 99 (played by Don Adams and Barbara Feldon) took CONTROL, combating the evil criminal organization known as KAOS.

In these audio segments, Leonard Stern helps us relive virtually every aspect of this classic TV series, and also discusses the Get Smart DVD set and the 2008 film starring Steve Carell and Anne Hathaway.

In this segment, Mr. Stern talks about growing up in New York and the writers he worked with early in his career, such as Larry Gelbart and Aaron Rubin. Leonard also talks about the pilot of Get Smart while in the Cone of Silence with host Jim Benson, and the creation of the classic opening titles for the series.

Leonard Stern Get Smart audio interview Segment Two

For this segment, our producer discusses the Get Smart Complete Series DVD Gift Set and the 2008 movie starring Steve Carell and Anne Hathaway, and how some of the humor on the series would now be considered politically incorrect. Mr. Stern also talks about actor Ed Platt who played the Chief of CONTROL, and how such phrases as Would You Believe, Missed it By That Much, and Sorry About That, Chief, took the nation by storm.

In this segment, Leonard examines the classic characters from the show, including Agent 13, Hymie the Robot and Siegfried (Bernie Kopell). Mr. Stern also reminisces about Don Adams and Barbara Feldon (Max and 99), and the events that led to the show being moved to CBS and its ultimate cancellation.
